In 2019, Swedish designer Fantasma Games released Flower Fortunes Megaways, the studio’s first use of Big Time Gaming’s Megaways game engine. They did it in a way that was so unusual that at a glance, you’d be forgiven for not recognising it as a Megaways game at all. It wasn’t just the distinctive way the studio had presented the reel-set but the collecting orbs to level up and unlock features system provided a brand new Megaways experience. Its unorthodoxies might have made it tricky to identify with at first, yet given the chance; its charms could bloom like a well-cared-for sunflower. Such was the creativity shown in Flower Fortunes Megaways, the thought of a supreme version was an exciting prospect indeed – what would Fantasma have in store this time around? Like the original Flower Fortunes slot, the studio has packed Flower Fortunes Supreme with surprises, but they are unlikely to be the sort of things fans were hoping for.

The first eyebrow-raiser was the fact the word ‘Megaways’ appears nowhere in the game, nor on the game sheet, or in the paytable. Flower Fortunes Supreme’s grid continues to function more or less in the same way as the original so make of that what you will. Flower Fortunes Supreme’s numbers tell quite a different story, though, where just about everything is down. This includes an average RTP drop to 95.88% (this can increase depending on the level reached), volatility in the medium range of the scale, and a hit frequency decrease to 35.94%. Players expecting positive max win news are going to be sorely disappointed, but we’ll refrain from dropping that bombshell for now.

At its base level, the game panel has 6-reels, each 5 positions high. As you collect orbs, this can increase to 9 positions high at the most. Its symbols are like Cuisenaire rods which can land in three different sizes – 1×1, 1×2, or 1×3. The five pattern-less symbols are the low pays, worth 1-1.5 times the stake for six of a kind, whereas the high pays are four patterned tiles paying 2.5-10x the bet for a six of a kind win. Normal wilds always appear in 1×1 size on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5 to substitute all paying symbols.

Flower Fortunes Supreme is quite a puzzling release. For a sequel, let alone a supposed ‘supreme’ sequel, it’s tough to think of why players might want to select this one over the original. Flower Fortunes Supreme is not a badly made game, but there’s just so much less to it than Flower Fortunes Megaways. Wherever you look, practically everything has been dropped to a lower setting as if this was the actual beta version that should have come out before Flower Fortunes Megaways. The fact you need to level up in order to benefit from higher RTP is a bit strange too although, to be fair, the default RTP is not terrible.

It can be enjoyable for sure, collecting orbs, activating extra features and so on, though the voice that used to commentate the action is conspicuous by its absence. The levelling up idea is a clever one, and the combination of bigger reels with extra features can blow up the tension. There is a feeling you’re missing out when playing Flower Fortunes Supreme, though, and one of the main reasons is the severe drop in potential. Now, the most to be had is 5,000x the bet, which is less than a third of the 18,480x found in the Megaways version (we’re yet to see proof of that potential though). Fantasma no doubt has its reasons, but they will probably be hard-pressed to find many players who would call that number slash ‘supreme’.

If we were to speculate, it feels like the hushing up of Megaways is in some way a motivating factor for Flower Fortunes Supreme’s existence – though we could be way off the mark, of course. Whether you want to class this release as a sideways step or a backwards stumble, Flower Fortunes Supreme doesn’t feel like forward progression. Since the first one was such a positive step-up for Fantasma, it is a shame. Unless Flower Fortunes Megaways is phased out, so there is no other option; there aren’t many other reasons to pick Flower Fortunes Supreme instead of the chunkier version that preceded it.
