A Review of Moonlight Mystery Slots Game

If you are a fan of the murder mystery genre or games based on murder mysteries you will definitely want to play Moonlight Mystery. It is like a blend of Sherlock Holmes and the game of Clue with an added twist. And on top of that it is a slots game designed by Rival Powered, one of the most innovative companies in the gambling software industry.

Moonlight Mystery is a 5-reel, 3-row, 15-pay line video slot game. The game uses stylized graphics inspired by board games and animation.

The premise of the game is quite simple: someone has been murdered and the Inspector and his companion the Doctor have been called upon to investigate the crime and unmask the vile culprit. After a brief introductory animation showing the murder happening in moonlight you are whisked away to the mansion Colonel and Lady Dunnit. There the Inspector questions the Professor, the Butler, the Maid, the Constable, and the Dunnits. You get to explore the house.

And the best part of all is that there are multiple bonus rounds as well as a random jackpot. The game is sure to keep you spinning all night long just to see what happens next.

Tiles in Moonlight Mystery Slots

There are twelve symbols in Moonlight Mystery. There are two Scatter symbols, a Wild symbol, and a Jackpot symbol. We’ll come back to those in the next section about the bonus games.

The high-value symbol is the Inspector himself. If you’re lucky to spin up five of his tiles you’ll win 1000 times your bet per pay line. The Doctor is the next highest-value character, paying 750 times your bet for five of a kind on a pay line.

The Inspector raises his pipe to his lips thoughtfully when his icons form a winning combination on one or more pay lines.

The Doctor furrows his brows and looks around in suspicion when his icons form a winning combination.

The Constable seems to be a Good Guy too as he pays 500 times your bet for five of a kind. The Constable blows his whistle when his icons appear in a winning combination on one or more pay lines.

The Professor strokes his goatee thoughtfully and glances around the room when he appears in a winning combination.

Colonel Dunnit raises a monocle to his eye and takes a closer look at you before glancing around.

The Maid reaches up behind her head and pulls out a large hair pin when she pays a prize.

The Butler strokes his chin and glances around suspiciously when he pays a prize.

Mrs. Dunnit raises her reading glasses to her eyes and looks around in bewilderment when she pays a prize.

It’s quite a show when several of the characters form winning combinations: everyone is glancing around suspiciously or apprehensively at everyone else.

All of the tiles are drawn as if for game cards and indeed you’ll see the game card motif in the bonus games.

The Bottle of Poison is the Wild symbol. It substitutes for all other symbols except the Jackpot and the Scatters. During regular play the number of Wild symbols that contribute to a prize act as a multiplier. So if you get the Inspector and two Bottle of Poison symbols on a pay line you’ll win 50 times your bet per line instead of the 25 times you would win for just having three Inspectors.

The Body icon is the Scatter symbol that triggers the Who Dunnit Bonus game.

The Lantern icon is the Scatter symbol that triggers 10 Free Spins.

The Magnifying Glass is the Jackpot symbol. You must get 2 or more of these icons on a pay line to win the Jackpot prize.

Bonus Games in Moonlight Mystery Slots

The Free Games bonus is a nice feature. The Wild symbol (Bottle of Poison) becomes an Expanding Wild during Free Spins games. Wilds do not act as multipliers in the Free Spins game.

The Who Dunnit Bonus Round is the coolest part of the game. You are taken to the Dunnit’s mansion and prompted to investigate the mystery. You enter the Dunnit’s home and must choose from four doors: two at the top of the stairs and two at the bottom.

When you open the door you’ll be prompted to choose one of four Crime Scene cards. After that you choose one of four Weapon cards, then one of four Culprit cards, and finally one of four Motive cards.

Because this is a Pick bonus you are awarded credits for each of your choices and the credits you would have gotten from choosing any of the other cards are shown to you along with your prize. You always win something during the Who Dunnit Bonus.

Game Controls in Moonlight Mystery Slots

There are a couple of interesting gadgets on the screen, although you have to look carefully to see them update. First, there is a clock on the upper right corner that tells you what your local time is. Second, the “Who-Dunn-It?” banner at the center top of the reels occasionally does a “wave” at you by highlighting each letter from left to right and then back to the left.

Click on either of the two street sign icons in the upper left and right corners to bring up the pay table screen. The left street sign is replaced by a prize tabulator during the Free Spins bonus game.

Click on any of the numbered balls on either the left or the right of the screen to change the number of active pay lines. You’ll activate all the pay lines up to and including that number.

Down below the screen you’ll find a medallion in the left-hand corner that shows you the amount you won on the last spin. Below that is the available balance you have to play with.

Next you can adjust the value of the coins you bet per line by clicking on the minus or plus symbols. The game defaults to .05. You can go all the way up to 1.00.

Next to the coin value control is a bar with three controls that scroll through the number of coins bet per line (1 to 5), the number of active pay lines (it’s faster to just click on the numbers beside the screen), and to set a Max Bet.

Real money players can click on Auto. If you are in practice mode the game pulls up a dialog that explains this restriction and asks if you want to play for real money.

Finally, the Spin button is in the lower right-hand corner.

The controls have a nice pseudo-Victorian, steampunk feel to them with a basic brass-and-wood motif.

Final Thoughts on Moonlight Mystery Slots

This is a fun game to play, no doubt. Rival Powered usually brings something special to the slot game experience. They want you to feel like you are in an adventure, not just sitting around clicking on the Spin button.

The background music (provided by a piano and violin) is suitably tense and suspenseful. The ambient sounds include occasional peels of thunder and when you spin the reels another set of instruments joins in to pick up the tempo.

When a bonus game is triggered the Scatter icons become animated. For example, the Free Games Lantern icon is replaced by a Hickockian black-on-yellow silhouette animation where a woman is menaced by a large man. When the Body icon triggers the Who-Dunn-It round a magnifying glass zooms in on the body and blood covers the picture.

This is definitely a thumbs-up, hands on game that most people will enjoy playing. We heartily recommend it for the design, the soundtrack, and the playing experience.
